Kites to Race at Buzzards Bay Regatta

CR:X Kiteboarding at Buzzards Bay RegattaNeil Pryde is pleased to announce a joint partnership with the 2017 Buzzards Bay Regatta to be held by the New Bedford Yacht Club in New Bedford, MA on the dates of August 4-6, 2017.

The Buzzards Bay Regatta has for many years been one of the nation’s largest multi-class sailing regattas.  This year’s running will be the 45th edition and, under new leadership, will focus heavily on a modernized format, refreshing approach, and a resetting of the overall mission of the regatta.  In an effort to showcase classes representative of the current and future state of performance sailing and racing, Buzzards Bay Regatta will, for the first time, include a kiteboarding discipline to the 2017 event.  The kite classes will include twin tip downwind slalom racing, and mixed open foil racing, in addition to the world’s first one design kiteboarding class – the CR:X – in hydrofoil mode.

The CR:X is a newly introduced one design class that aims to bring more youth sailors into the world of kite racing through yacht club and junior sailing program implementation.  The CR:X provides a platform that satisfies a wide range of skills, from learn-to-kite all the way up to one design foil racing.  It’s a convertible package that can be used as a twin tip, but can also be converted into a foil board by rearranging the foot straps and mounting a foil to the bottom of the board.  In foil mode, it’s surprisingly quick – placing 5th overall in the 2017 Charleston Fort to Battery Race when matched up against a field of 50 high performance foiling crafts, including Moths, Open Kite Foils, windsurfers, etc.

For BBR, NP will be providing sets of CR:X charter gear for the regatta in addition to supplying the PRO for the kite circle as well as additional race committee personnel.  Neil Pryde is dedicated to the growth and development of kite racing, particularly within a one design format, and the addition of kite racing to one of the country’s most iconic regattas is truly a huge and progressive step forward for both the sailing and kiteboarding worlds.

Neil Pryde eagerly looks forward to supporting the sport of one design kite racing and is additionally very proud to assist with the running of the kite circle for the 45th edition of this event.  Registration is now open, so sign up now to be a part of the 2017 Buzzards Bay Regatta kiteboarding fleet!
